Tips that are not in every travel guide, but worth a visit.

Walk to explore the city

Extra: Amsterdam Tips© shutterstock

Torment yourself with the hop-on-hop-off bus through the narrow streets of downtown – how uncool. Anything visitors to Amsterdam want to know about Amsterdam they will find with a New Amsterdam Free Tour. During the three-hour walk across the city, friendly guides will give you an insight into the history of the city, funny anecdotes and helpful tips. The tour is free and takes place several times a day, but a tip is welcome. From the same organizer there are also tours through the red light district or by bike in the surrounding area. The tours start at the National Monument on the Dam. Registration via internet.

Beer tasting

Lovers of the barley juice should definitely visit a brewery in Amsterdam! It does not always have to be Heineken (the tour there costs at least 16 euros). Alternatively, the Bierfabriek Amsterdam offers. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 3.30 pm the tour begins. Cost: 5 euros. There are the freshly brewed beers in the tasting room to try out. The nucleus of the beer factory is only a few steps away in the Brouwerij, t IJ, probably the smallest brewery in Amsterdam.

For music lovers for free

If you feel like music, you can immerse yourself in Amsterdam’s sprawling music scene. There is a large selection of live events, especially during the week. In Mulligan’s Irish Bar you can listen to the folk of the green island or be enticed into the sound world of jazz in Café Alto. The rock fans are also entertained in Amsterdam, for example in Maloe Melo. There are regular concerts there (sometimes free).

Friends of classical music will also get their money’s worth in Amsterdam for free. During the season, so-called luncheon concerts take place weekly in the famous concert hall Concertgebouw. Every Wednesday at 12:30, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra’s house opens its doors to all visitors and offers them a free audition.

Art in passing

In a narrow passage between Begijnhof and Historical Museum is the Schuttersgalerij (Rifle Gallery). In this freely accessible glass-paneled passage hang large-scale paintings of Amsterdam 17th-century artillery guilds, including a portrait of the Dutch painter Rembrandt. The small but imposing exhibition gives a good idea of how wealthy Amsterdamers lived in earlier centuries. Good to know: The Schuttersgalerij is part of the Amsterdam Museum, but the visit is for free.

Proud horses

A special experience is the visit to the Hollandsche Manege. The famous Dutch riding school is located in the middle of the city and was opened in 1744. The current building, inspired by the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, was built in 1882. The Hollandsche Manege is freely accessible to visitors. Spectators can simply sit on the stands and watch the riding students practice.

View with fun factor

You can barely overlook the striking building of the Science Museum Nemo diagonally behind Amsterdam Central Station. There, scientific topics are explained in a playful way. However, very few people know that the roof of the 30-meter-high green building, which resembles a ship, is accessible free of charge during the day. In addition to wonderful views of Amsterdam, the roof also offers picnic areas and water features during the summer months.
